About Ben Foster of Newton Wines
Ben Foster, the owner of Newton Wines, became interested in wine early in his life. Ben’s father would explain the difference between a Bordeaux and Burgundy, or Rioja and Rhone, when Ben was still very young.
After leaving school Ben trained in the hospitality trade and spent these years working in bars, cooking and later managing wine bars in London. He studied for his HND in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management at City of Westminster College during this time. The chance to spend a year in Australia led to friendships with people working in some of the up and coming wineries including Yalumba and Penfolds. Wine trips to Barossa, Adelaide Hills and the McLaren Vale cemented Ben’s early interest in wine.
After leaving London in 1989, Ben worked with his family setting up and running a very successful Hotel and Restaurant business on Exmoor for eight years. With Ben’s natural ability and growing expertise they rapidly gained a reputation for their varied wine list as well as excellent food with numerous recommendations in independent guides and features in magazines.
When the family sold the hotel in 1997 Ben became involved at The Duke of York in Iddesleigh, Devon as Bar Manager for over ten years and he is responsible for structuring their popular wine list.
Ben has studied with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and has achieved his Advanced Certificate and Diploma, providing his fine palate, good nose and extensive experience with industry recognition.
A longstanding ambition to run a wine business was rekindled in 2007 and 2008 when Ben travelled extensively through the winelands of South Africa. He was particularly impressed by the wines of the lesser known Elgin and Bot River regions, the reputation of which is now coming to the attention of the wine world.
Ben lives with his wife Susan, their dogs and a case or two of their favourite wines. His ambitions are to travel to more of the world’s wine-producing countries and to eventually own a house with a cellar.
