The Painted Wolf Winery

Newton Wines Painted Wolf winery Image

Painted Wolf Wines is a dynamic, innovative South African wine company. They are dedicated to the production of distinct, authentic wines, the conservation of African wild dogs and their habitat and the building of a community which share similar interests and values.

Founded by Jeremy and Emma Borg, the Painted Wolf Winery pack is a community of talented individuals who bring the best available grapes, technical and practical skills to Painted Wolf Wines.

They are primarily interested in the production of wines with a distinctive South African feel, and to that end have an emphasis on wines crafted from Chenin Blanc and Pinotage – the two benchmark South African grape varieties. We also vinify other varieties, with a special interest in Shiraz.

They pride themselves on having focused energy and relentless determination, living the Painted Wolf mantra of being ‘Persistently remarkable, remarkably persistent‘.

They actively support the conservation of African Wild Dogs. Funds from every bottle sold go towards the research and conservation of this intriguing, beautiful but highly endangered species – successful long term conservation of African Wild Dogs is only possible where large tracts of wilderness still exist…

The "Den" Chenin Blanc 2015

The

The Chenin grapes come from 20 to 40 year old vines grown in the Paarl region. A really well crafted just off-dry wine with tropical fruit flavours balanced by lemon pepper. The wine has a lovely texture with a long finish with enough acid to keep it really fresh and vibrant. The wine has been sealed with a screw cap to maintain its freshness.

Grapes: Chenin Blanc     Alcohol: 13.5%

The "Den" Pinotage 2013

The

The grapes for this wine have been hand picked from three vineyards, Kasteelsig in the Swartland and Leeuwenkuil in Agter Paarl and Southern Cross in the Simondium region of Paarl. Southern Cross is a site with granite soils whilst the other two sites have similar shale soils. None of the blocks from which the grapes have been sourced is irrigated.

This Pinotage is a juicy fruit packed smooth wine with a smorgasbord of red and black Summer berries, warm spice, coffee and toasty wood flavours.

Decanter World Wine Awards 2011 – Silver medal

Grapes: Pinotage 95%, Malbec 5%     Alcohol: 13.5%

"Den" Rose 2015

Rosalind Rose 2012 from Newton Wines

A dry savoury rose coupled with ripe cherry and strawberry fruit. It also has good minerality and a touch of acidity to keep it fresh and breezy.
This wine is delicious as a young wine and may bottle age for a few years.

Grapes: Pinotage     Alcohol: 13.25%

Lekanyane-Cape Hunting White 2010/12

Lekanyane-Cape Hunting White 2010/12 from Newton Wines

A rich, vibrant white ‘Cape blend’, has a bouquet of pineapple, lime, vanilla and a sophisticated minerality which follow through onto the palate and is complimented by a creamy long fresh finish. This reminds me a little of Hunter Valley Semillon – a real gem!

Grapes: Chenin, Viognier, Verdelho     Alcohol: 13.5%

Roussanne 2012

Newton Wines picture of Painted Wolf Black Back Roussanne

The wine was fermented at Koopmanskloof in Stellenbosch in a large new 2000 litre oak tank before being decanted into 500 litre 3rd fill French oak barrels in which had been previously used to make viognier. Chenin Blanc lees were added back to the wine, which was stirred regularly. Malolactic fermentation was not encouraged. After 8 months in wood, the wine was bottled. Before being bottled the wines was finessed with a small quantity of fresh high acid Clairette Blanche and Grenache Blanc. Only 5,000 bottles were produced.
This has to be one of my favourite white wines I stock. Excellent stone fruit aromas which is followed through to the pallet. A beautiful finely judge wine from a grape which is normally found in the south of France and Rhone.

Grapes: Roussanne     Alcohol: 13%

Guillermo Pinotage 2011

A premium wine again showing that Pinotage can be a serious red wine! An intense, rich wine packed with flavours of ripe blueberry and mulberry, exotic spice and creamy vanilla with evident ripe tannins and a long lingering finish.

Grapes: Pinotage     Alcohol: %

Pictus II, 2011

Newton Wines Pictus Two, 2010 Painted Wolf

Pictus is named after the scientific name for an African Painted Dog, Lycaon Pictus, meaning Wolf in Greek and Painted in Latin. Painted Wolf Pictus is a wine made with meticulous care and blended from some of my favourite barrels of the vintage. Pictus 2010 is the second of a series of wines featuring a different piece of artwork each year. The art work for Pictus 2010 features the painting ‘Moremi Wild Dogs‘ by artist Saskia‘Crocbait’ von Sperber.
The grapes were hand picked into small baskets and taken to the cellar. Grapes were all hand sorted and crushed into small open fermenters. The wine was fermented with a blend of natural vineyard yeast and commercial strains. They hand punched down the cap a number of times per day. The finished wine has been pressed in a basket press.
An intense brooding full bodied spicy blend with good balance and a long finish.
Will keep for another 10 years but is absolutely stunning now!

Grapes: 92% Shiraz, 4% Pinotage, 4% Grenache     Alcohol: 14.5%
