Luddite Wines

Luddite Cork

Some people describe Luddite Shiraz as Niels Verburg contained in a glass; Niels is six foot four and when he smiles appears to be beaming an embrace in your direction.

As a young winemaker traveling the world Niels confirmed his love for Shiraz when working a harvest in Australia but it was a winery in Chile that inspired his wine-making method, ‘It was as if I’d gone back 20 years, it was ramshackle, chaotic but they had great fruit and passion and I’d never seen that quality of wine.’

The Luddite vineyards lie on the eastern slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains, 30km from the Atlantic Ocean, and fall within the Walker Bay Wine Ward. The morning sun washing over the cool South-eastern slopes encourages long ripening, which in turn creates spicy characteristics in the well-balanced Luddite Shiraz.

Luddite Saboteur 2015

Newton Wines picture of Saboteur 2015 bottle

The Saboteur is a wine which is bold but had the resultant spice of a cooler vintage. We fermented all the different clones and varietals in small batch open fermenters. Fermentation temperatures were higher than normal due to a non-existent cooling plant (28°C). No skin contact was given after ferment and the wines were pressed into tank to undergo malolactic fermentation.

After malolactic fermentation all three varietals were kept separate in 100% New French oak. The wine remained in barrels for 24 months after which we blended all the different varietals together to create the best possible wine. The blending process took place over five months to make sure that we had the correct balance and percentages. Solely available from Newton Wines in the UK.

The 2014 was awarded 5 Stars in the 2016 Platters guide !! This continues to show that class.

Grapes: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre and Cabernet Franc     Alcohol: 14%

Luddite Saboteur White 2017

Closed under crown cap this is my new favourite white wine!
“The nose shows a floral top note before citrus and white peach, spice and the vaguest hint of vanilla. The palate is rich and broad but beautifully balanced. Good weight and texture, nicely coated acidity and a pithy finish. This is immaculately crafted stuff whatever the name might imply.” From South Africa’s Wine Magazine.

Grapes: 68% Chenin Blanc, 15% Viognier, 15% Blanc Fumé     Alcohol: 14%

Luddite Shiraz 2013

Some people describe Luddite Shiraz as Niels Verburg contained in a glass; Niels is six foot four and his smile is the embodiment of a warm embrace.
This wine has deep purple and garnet colours to it and rich welcoming aromas of dark summer fruits, nutmeg, cinnamon, dark chocolate, plums and spice. All these flavours are backed by fine tannins and subtle oaky notes.

Grapes: Shiraz (dry farmed)     Alcohol: 14.5%

Luddite Chenin Blanc 2014

Luddite Chenin Blanc 2014 - picture by Newton Wines

The Luddite Chenin is a real “push the boat out” wine.
It starts off a bit reductive i.e. flinty struck match and wet dog, then opens up to reveal beautiful peach and apricot aromatics with hints of honey, cinnamon and spice coming to the fore. Rich, mouth filling entry with yellow peach, melons, raisins and spice. Good fruit sweetness balanced by clean, citrus tones create a beautifully balanced wine with a refreshing finish.

Grapes: Chenin Blanc     Alcohol: 14%
