Bartinney Wine Estate

Bartinney wine case and glass by Newton Wines

We visited Bartinney Wine Estate in the early part of 2011. The farm is situated on the hellish high slopes of Helshoogte Pass and overlooks the picturesque Banghoek Valley in Stellenbosch. Passionately involved husband and wife team, Michael and Rose Jordaan, repurchased the 40 ha family farm in 2006 with a vision to create excellent wines and reawaken the charm of this beautiful property. The newly renovated boutique cellar now produces Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from low yielding vineyards positioned on cooler elevated slopes. Cabernet Sauvignon is planted in deep red soils on the slightly lower foothills and the 2009 vintage has just been released too much acclaim. Newton Wines also imports the Estate‟s excellent range of wines under the Noble Savage label.

Winemaker Profile

The current winemaker is Ronell Wiid. who built her reputation as Assistant Winemaker at Boschendal between 1989-1997 and at Hazendal where she was Head Winemaker until joining Bartinney in 2012. Since joining Bartinney the wines have gone up in the estimation of many critics. I agree!

Conservation at Bartinney

When the Jordaan family declared Bartinney their new permanent home in April 2008, energetic Rose Jordaan made tree planting her mission. More than 5000 trees and fynbos, indigenous to the area, have been re-established on thirteen hectares of rehabilitated land from what was previously a pine and gum plantation. Plans for a nursery to help restore and protect neglected slopes on the farm are on the cards. They have also received Champion status in the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) in South Africa for the last two years.

Bartinney Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Bartinney Sauvignon Blanc 2012 from Newton Wines

The grapes were handpicked in small bins and stored in a cold room for three days before crushing and destemming began. The free run juice was inoculated with cultivated yeast cultures and fermentation commenced in stainless steel tanks. The wine was bottled during the middle of June 2013.
Bartinney Sauvignon Blanc is pale lemon in colour with a green hue. On the nose it has lovely sweet honeyed fruit notes, hints of grass and apple sauce. A dry wine with a medium mouthweight on the palate, it is a crisp, fresh and clean wine with flavours of lemon peel, lemon sherbet and ripe citrus and tropical fruit with delicate notes of minerality. A balance of fruit and acidity gives a lingering finish.

Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc 100%     Alcohol: 13.5%

Bartinney Chardonnay 2010

Bartinney Chardonnay 2010 from Newton Wines

The grapes were handpicked early to mid February. The grapes de-stemmed and crushed lightly before pressing. Only the free run juice was inoculated with cultivated yeasts with the fermentation taking place in barrels. 33% new French oak and 66% second and third fill 225 litre barriques were used. The wine underwent maturation for 10 months in wood and 6 month in stainless steel. Bottling took place during the middle of June 2011. Only 6000 bottles were produced.
This Chardonnay is pale lemon gold and displays a bouquet of lifted apricot blossom, lemon and toasted caramel oak and vanilla. Dry rich and creamy on the palate with a medium mouth-weight, the palate shows tropical fruit and ripe pear characters, interlaced with chalky acidity. This wine is creamy and nutty with a soft refined palate and finishes with great intensity. Drinking now and over the next 5 years.

Grapes: 100% Chardonnay     Alcohol: 13.5%

Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon 2009/10

Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon 2009/10 from Newton Wines

The grapes are sourced from eight different sights on around the estate and carefully vinified separately. Fermented for around seven days before undergoing a maceration period of a month, the wine was then pressed and racked off to French Oak barriques-30% new and 70% second fill. It has been aged for eighteen months before bottling and was released at the beginning of January 2011.
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a vibrant and full bodied wine. The nose displays aromatic plum and dense cassis with caramel “crunchie bar” and spice notes. On the palate classic oak characteristics like tobacco leaf, cedar and roasted coffee beans compliment the black berry fruit flavours. The tannins are refined but present and this wine is drinking well now (decant an hour before serving) and will only get better over the next five years or more.
The 2010 (which was released in 2013) has similar characteristics to the 2009 but has more ripe fruit with excellent fine grained juicy tannins and a long finish. This is again typical of the very high quality being produced from the Bartinney team.

Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon     Alcohol: 14.5%

Noble Savage Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Noble Savage Red 2010

Noble Savage Red 2009 from Newton Wines

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has a vibrant cherry and raspberry nose with a hint of cherry oak. The palate is round and concentrated with layered crunchy berry fruit, spice and some gentle oak flavours. A wine enjoyable on its own but can partner a variety of robust dishes.

Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot     Alcohol: 14%
